Fiji takes centre stage in new Channel TEN series

The Coral Coast and Pacific Harbour regions of Fiji became a culinary playground for Channel TEN’s new travel and food series “Foodie Adventures with Ash Pollard,” which premiered Saturday, 1 September 2018.

Hosted by the effervescent Ash Pollard, who quickly became a household favourite after starring in My Kitchen Rules, Dancing with the Stars and I’m a Celebrity…Get me out of here!, the visual feast sees Ash collaborate with some of the world’s greatest chefs before returning to Melbourne to showcase her newly found skills, hosting dinner parties with celebrity guests including Kris Smith, Joel Creasey and Dane Swan, to name a few.

Supported by Tourism Fiji and Nanuku Auberge Resort, the Fiji episode, which airs Saturday 22 September, will follow Ash as she explores the stunning coastline of Fiji uncovering produce rich areas such as the iconic Sigatoka Markets (aka “Fiji’s salad bowl”). Working with Nanuku’s own Executive Chef, Oliver Scarf, the pair craft dishes together using local, sustainable and seasonally-sourced Fijian ingredients.

“As cliché as this may sound, arriving in Fiji was like coming home,” says Pollard. “The Fijian produce was always fresh, and cooking there was such an aesthetic experience. Every morsel on the dish offered its own vibrant colour and unique flavour. After working with Nanuku’s Oliver Scarf, I learnt his greatest lesson is to keep things simple. I’m a great believer in this so I’ll continue the trend in my own cooking.”

The Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Fiji, Mr. Matthew Stoeckel said, “This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase Fiji’s colourful, local produce and unique island cuisine to an Australian audience.”

“We are excited about the culinary movement that is really starting to take shape in Fiji and an increasing focus on fresh, locally sourced produce featuring on restaurant’s menus. We take pride in teaching visitors about local flavours and delicacies, so they are able to share their island experience back home.”

The episode also sees Ash enjoy several emblematic Nanuku activities including enjoying her stunning villa, jet-skiing, learning about Nanuku’s conservation efforts with high-profile Marine Scientist, Kelly-Dawn Bentley and watching mud- crab fishing and traditional ‘lovo’ cooking (an earth oven) with Nanuku’s Josua Cakautini.

    IMPORTANT DATES:

Foodie Adventures with Ash Pollard aired: Channel 10, 1 Sep at 4:30pm AEST.
Fiji episode to air: 22 Sep, 4:30pm AEST. (Replay: Encore, Channel 11 on 23 Sep, 9:00am AEST).

Nanuku Introduces ‘Ki Na Kalokalo’ Private Island Camping

Pacific Harbour, Fiji – With an emphasis very much on rustic and soulful, Nanuku Auberge Resort Fiji has expanded its already top-heavy list of exclusive list of Fiji activities for clients to a whole new level with private island camping.

The ‘Ki na kalokalo’ (pathway to the stars) camping experience revolves around an overnight stay on the resort’s nearby private island, Nanuku Island, and begins when resort staff take guests on the short trip aboard Nanuku 1 for an activity-filled afternoon.

This includes a host of options of specific Fiji resort activities – from exploring the island with jet skis, swimming, snorkelling, kayaking paddle boarding – guests can even join their hosts, the resort’s team of ‘Nanuku Buddies’ in helping to catch and prepare the fresh fish, bamboo-pole cooked prawns and traditional ‘kokoda’ served for dinner.

Less strenuous activities include palm-frond hat and basket weaving, coconut scraping, searching for the elusive Hawksbeak turtles which inhabit the island – or simply relaxing.

As the sun sets and the ‘kalokalo’ (stars) begin to emerge, the ‘Buddies’ entertain guests with traditional songs and the sharing of centuries-old legends of Fiji.

Once dinner and the entertainment have been concluded the crew retire to the nearby-moored Nanuku 1 for the evening offering guests perfect privacy for the night – but not before leaving a ‘survival kit’, mobile phone and a Tiki torch pathway to a discreetly located and hurricane lamp-lit outhouse.

For those who wish to sleep undercover, weather-proof tents are an option but, according to general manager, Sascha Hemmann, most guests prefer to sleep under the ‘kalokalo’ in comfortable hammocks.

A highlight of the following morning – the arrival of ‘chef’ Hemmann aboard a jet ski to personally cook a delicious breakfast of pancakes, bacon and eggs, juices and fresh-brewed coffee and tea after which guests return to the resort.

The ‘Ki na kalokalo’ private island camping experience is available daily, contact the resort for pricing.

Pacific Harbour is renowned for its star-lit night skies, the calm waters of Beqa Lagoon forming a sky-to- horizon reflecting mirror earning the region its ‘pathway to the stars’ title.

The resort’s “Villa Mamas” (the term nods to the easy-going Fijian culture) provide thoughtful care for each guest, serving as a hybrid between a housekeeper and butler. Every family has a dedicated nanny. Attentive staff extends to the property’s food and beverage outlets, where guests may opt for a pre-arranged gourmet picnic on the beach or an alfresco barbeque by the pool. Each evening, the executive chef prepares a three-course menu crafted from the freshest of local and imported produce, resulting in a fabulous fusion of international and Fijian dishes.

Pacific Harbour is known as the Adventure Capital of Fiji, where world-class surfing and fishing are just a few feet from the villas’ doorsteps. Guests of Nanuku are privy to a host of activities from stand-up river rafting to hiking through the rainforest. One of the many adventures available at Nanuku is a waterfall hike, where guests may experience Fiji’s lush interior with a medicine man, who points out tidbits on the various local plants and traditional food-gathering techniques.

Nanuku’s Vunikau (Treehouse) Residence is perched atop a volcanic outcrop and overlooks the tranquil Beqa Lagoon. Made up of four suites, the Vunikau Residence is comprised of the Penthouse Suite and three Vunikau Suites, which can be used exclusively or on a stand-alone basis. Each Vunikau Suite is separately keyed and has private access off a shared breezeway.

Plans for Nanuku include a limited number of private beachfront residences that will be developed and offered for purchase. Each Nanuku Ocean Estates residence will be oriented toward the shore to capture ocean breezes and panoramic views.

This is a rare opportunity in Fiji, where just 9 percent of the land is available for private residential ownership. When designed and constructed to Auberge standards, the villas may be included in Nanuku’s rental program and Auberge Resorts’ home-exchange program

Nanuku offers its own private airstrip and is a 20-minute scenic flight from Nadi Airport. Upon landing, guests are transferred by private car to the resort a few minutes away.

Rates at Nanuku begin at $756 and include all meals, villa mama and nanny service, golf buggy, Wifi, non-motorized water sports, daily-hosted drinks and canapés and more.  For more information, visit http://nanukufiji.com or call +679 345 2100.
